Say Goodbye
Chapter 17 – Different Worlds

Date: Wednesday 12th July 2011
Location: Harrods, London, England

Playing fashion advisor to Bonnie was rapidly becoming habit now, but today – unlike the last three shopping trips – was a million times more important than any other day and Emma knew that she couldn’t complain, no matter how much she may have wanted to.

‘And with that one you could get away with the longer veil of course…’

She watched as the sales assistant fussed around Bonnie, her arms full of veils in varying colours and varying designs, several tiaras clutched in each hand. Bonnie herself was stood on top of a small stool, admiring her reflection in the full length mirrors, turning this way and that. Every time she so much as moved, the spotlights caught the beading on her dress and an involuntary smile pulled at the corners of Emma’s mouth.

‘What do you think, Em?’ she asked eventually, letting a breath go suddenly and blowing away a lock of hair that had fallen across her face. ‘I’m not sure anymore…’

At this declaration the sales assistant perked up and plucked out another dress. ‘How about this one?’ She smiled alluringly, holding out the gold and ivory affair while she sorted out another tiara. ‘Or is it too much? I know you wanted understated, but this dress really would look beautiful on you.’

‘I’d prefer to wear white to be honest,’ murmured Bonnie, slipping out of the dress she was currently wearing and reaching for the previous one. ‘I’m thinking Amy Adams in Enchanted.’

Emma raised an eyebrow and chuckled softly. ‘I didn’t realise you wanted to wear a meringue for your big day,’ she commented.

‘I don’t!’ She laughed. ‘I meant the colour. I think white will look better on me, that’s all.’

Nodding, Emma considered this and placed the headband she’d been toying with on the cabinet in front of her. ‘You have a point,’ she said, smiling over at her friend. ‘Although I’ve never really imagined you as a Disney Princess before, Bon, you’re not exactly the type.’

‘Well, good, because I have no intention of looking anything like a Disney Princess on the day, it wouldn’t suit me,’ Bonnie replied. ’So you can shut up.’

She smiled in response, stifling a laugh and wandered over to look at some of the dresses the sales assistant hadn’t even considered, wondering for a moment why. She was still having trouble coming to terms with the fact Bonnie was getting married, let alone the fact it was to Dan of all people. Planning the actual wedding was one step further than Emma could sensibly comprehend.

Her hand fell onto a simple white halter neck with a little detailing on the bodice, small clusters of diamantes glittering in the light. ‘What about this?’ she asked softly.

The assistant looked appalled that she’d even suggested it and began to shake her head vigorously. ‘Oh no, no, no, Miss Wright wouldn’t want that,’ she argued.

‘Why not? What’s wrong with it?’ Bonnie furrowed her brow, reaching out to take the dress from Emma’s hands. She took a moment or two to examine it, and then said, ‘I want to try this one on, thanks.’

The assistant looked as though she was about to faint, but obliged all the same, helping Bonnie into the gown and doing it up with ease.

A second later the bride to be’s face lit up and she glanced back at Emma. ‘It’s perfect!’

Mandy, the sales assistant, reached for the nearest wrack before she hit the floor.

After a little careful inspection, it turned out that the dress in question only had a five hundred pound price tag opposed to the three thousand ones the sales assistant had been making her try on. No wonder she’d been hiding it away. Someone was clearly on commission around here.

And who could resist trying to make a packet on the Radcliffe wedding anyway? Emma didn’t exactly blame her, but it really did take the biscuit. If anyone ever tried pulling that stunt with her, she’d be out for blood the moment she realised.

‘Now we just need to find you a dress, don’t we?’ Mandy’s eyes lit up, so Bonnie quickly added, ‘Shall we go and have a look in Selfridges for that?’

Emma chuckled and picked up the box containing Bonnie’s veil and headed for the exit with her friend in tow.

Once they’d packed everything away in the car, they headed across the road to get coffee before making their way toward Mayfair to look for jewellery. Only the best would do, so naturally a trip to Tiffany’s was in order, she had extra cash to spend now after all and Emma had always been good at spending other people’s money.

‘Wait, I love this bit, don’t turn it off!’

Rupert paused with his thumb poised over the power button on the remote and let a breath go as he watched himself on the screen. Ron was currently trying to play the hero by clubbing Grawp round the legs with a large branch which, unsurprisingly, didn’t have any effect whatsoever. As proud as he was to have been a part of the Harry Potter phenomenon, he wasn’t all that keen on watching the movies back anymore – especially several years down the line.

Curling up against him, Aimée snatched the remote from his hand and gave him no choice but to watch. He’d survive, but staring at Harry Potter for several hours wasn’t exactly how he’d envisioned this evening.

‘Do you want a beer?’ He needed an escape route and he needed one quickly. ‘I’ll go and grab a couple of bottles,’ he added, rising from his seat only to get pulled back down into it seconds later by one of his belt loops.

She laid her head on his shoulder and looked up at him through her dark lashes. ‘Are you embarrassed, baby?’ she cooed playfully, poking him gently in the ribs. ‘Because you look good in this, there’s really no reason to be.’

Rupert returned her gaze and shrugged his shoulders, a very soft sigh escaping him as he closed his eyes a moment later. ‘You’re as bad as my mum,’ he murmured. ‘She says the same thing all the time.’

‘And she’s right, Rupe, you should always listen to your mum.’ She grinned and reached up to press a kiss to his cheek. ‘Fountain of all knowledge,’ she added.

Nodding, he said no more and simply sat, curling further into himself as she ran her fingers through his hair over and over and over again. Tonight was supposed to be the night he ended it all, but each time he so much as even attempted to open his mouth to she’d do something to make him chicken out again, like wrinkle her nose in that really cute way she did sometimes or say something he couldn’t possibly ignore.

Therefore tonight was slowly turning into a nightmare instead.

When the film eventually came to an end, Rupert found himself being nudged awake and opened his eyes, coming face-to-face with a grinning Aimée. ‘Don’t worry, the nightmare’s over,’ she murmured. ‘It’s gone now.’

Little did she know the nightmare was nowhere near over yet and was only just about to begin. Yet, no matter how much he knew he needed to say something, he hesitated again and went off in search of a bottle of Carling for Dutch courage. He managed to find one a minute later and downed half before returning to the living room and sitting down once again. He clasped his hands in his lap, looking down at his feet for several moments before finally speaking.

‘Aims, I need to talk to you about something,’ he said quickly, blurting the words out before he lost his bottle.

Aimée stiffened in her seat before smiling softly and glancing his way. ‘Good,’ she replied. ‘I need to talk to you, too, actually.’

‘Oh, well, umm… you first then.’ Rupert nodded his head and offered her a timid smile, placing his hand on her knee gently. If she had something to say, it was only fair she got to say it before he made his declaration.

Shaking her head, she lowered her gaze.

He cleared his throat, taking this as a sign for him to continue and that she had no intention of saying whatever she wanted to say yet. ‘OK,’ he started quite confidently, although he knew it wouldn’t last much longer. ‘See, the thing is there’s this – what I mean is that I’ve been-‘ He stopped dead, sighing, and then got to his feet again, beginning to pace.

Aimée gazed up at him, a small frown on her face. ‘Rupe, you’re pacing…’ she murmured softly.

Looking back to her, he raised an eyebrow, and then shook his head, shoving his hands into his pockets and exhaling loudly.

She shuffled anxiously in her seat and moved to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, biting down softly on her bottom lip. ‘I can go first if you want,’ she said.

‘No, it’s fine, I know what I want to say, it’s just difficult,’ responded Rupert, closing his eyes so he didn’t have to look at her.

‘Rupert, I think I should say this first, it’s important. You really should know that-’

Swallowing down hard, he looked back to her, his hands leaving his pockets and raking up into his hair. ‘It’s over,’ he murmured just as she finished off her own announcement.

‘-I’m pregnant.’

Yep, it was a nightmare all right.
