Chapter 2 – Forgetful
After her trip to Armani last week with Rupert, something had been eating away at Emma, and today was no different. As she sat down in makeup, closing her eyes and letting the girls do their work, she couldn’t help but let her mind wander back to familiar territory.
It didn’t normally bother her what Rupert was wearing. So why, upon this particular occasion, was she so concerned with it? He’d met her family many times before, nothing new there. He’d met all of her closest friends as well, so she wasn’t anxious about that either. Maybe it was the addition of her grandparents, their opinions were pretty important to her. Yes, that had to be it; she wanted her grandmother to like him, although she wasn’t exactly sure why…
It’s not as though she cared what they thought of anyone else, so long as they didn’t show her up anyway.
As she made her way onto set half an hour later, questions were still going round in her head and she found it hard to concentrate at first. For once, she was thankful they didn’t need her right away and she stood on the sidelines, watching everyone else at work, lost in her thoughts. It was five minutes before anyone spoke to her and even then, she didn’t really hear what they said to her.
‘Earth to Emma, come in Emma...’
Emma sighed, frustrated, tearing her eyes away from the scene playing out before her and to Katie who was now stood beside her.
‘Are you OK? You seem a little off with the fairies today,’ she said, a gentle yet curious smile on her face. ‘Bonnie sent me over to try and get it out of you.’
At Katie’s confession, Emma looked across the studio to where Bonnie was stood and couldn’t help but laugh as the redhead began to whistle innocently, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. ‘Sent you over to do her dirty work more like it.’ She smiled. ‘I’m fine though, nothing to worry about.’
Katie nodded, clearly not wanting to pry anymore than needs be, that was Bonnie’s job after all; it always had been. ‘Right… I’ll just go then,’ she said and a second later did just that.
Emma watched her friends when Katie rejoined Bonnie, a knowing smile on her face as they whispered to each other, occasionally glancing in her direction. Honestly, Bonnie always had to have her nose in other people business; the girl didn’t know when to give it a rest. She meant well though, so Emma couldn’t exactly hate her for it.
Chortling to herself, she turned back to the action currently being filmed, watching as David did his stuff, bellowing orders. She couldn’t help but admire the man; he certainly knew what he was doing when it came to Harry Potter. He was so passionate about every little detail and it was wonderful to watch it all unravel.
In the end, she was only needed for an hour, so made her way back to her trailer afterwards, discarding of her robes and flopping down onto the couch. She’d probably be in trouble for throwing her costume around like that, but right now she couldn’t care less.
Emma managed ten minutes to herself before she heard voices outside and moved onto her knees, peering out of the window and spotting Evanna and Jessie heading for the door. Sighing, she swung herself back around and got up, opening the door before they even got the chance to knock on it.
‘Yes?’ she asked, sounding suitably putout as she leant against the doorframe and folded her arms.
Evanna seemed to hesitate slightly, her bright blue eyes wide, but Jessie kept on coming, clearly determined. ‘Hi Emma!’ she enthused, stopping right in front of her. ‘How are you today?’
Swallowing hard, Emma wasn’t sure how to answer that and then when she spotted Bonnie and Katie not far behind, she gave up on answering it altogether. She turned and headed back into her trailer. ‘What is this, some kind of invasion?’ Moving to pick up her robes, she glanced to Jessie as she perched herself on the edge of the table. ‘Come on, spill,’ she added.
‘Well, we-’
‘We wanted to ask you about your party, Em,’ Bonnie interrupted, slumping down onto the couch the moment she entered the trailer. ‘Rupe said it’s turning into some sort of formal affair, which you failed to tell us, so we need to know what to wear.’
‘Oh.’ Emma nodded, sitting back down, her robes now folded on the cushions beside her. ‘I guess I forgot to mention it.’
Bonnie shook her head, grinning. ‘A likely story.’
With an exasperated sigh, Emma shook her head and then looked to Katie hopefully, after some kind of support instead of the Spanish Inquisition. ‘Honestly, Bon, it skipped my mind, we’ve been so busy lately,’ she explained, hoping it sounded like a plausible excuse. ‘I was going to tell you… eventually.’
This time it was Jessie’s turn to look amused. ‘Eventually? That means never,’ she said, laughing.
Emma wanted to go over and slap her – in a nice way of course. As much as she liked the new girl, Jessie did get annoying sometimes, especially when she was trying to fit in with the other girls. She had a knack for trying too hard.
‘Are we going shopping?’ Evanna chipped in from where she was stood, hovering by the door.
‘I don’t think there’s time for us to go together,’ said Katie, picking up a cushion and hugging it against her chest as she sat on the arm of the couch. ‘Although it could be fun.’
Even though the idea was a very nice one, Emma already had plans to go shopping with her mum for the ideal outfit, so had to say no to them. Unfortunately, this didn’t get rid of them, as she would have liked, and it wasn’t until Dan burst into the trailer unannounced that anyone made the effort to move.
‘Aha! So this is where you’re all hiding!’ he announced, grinning maniacally. ‘David’s looking for you.’ He pointed at Jessie, who jumped up quickly and scurried out of the trailer, looking flustered.
It wasn’t long until the other girls dispersed as well and Emma, left alone on the couch, turned her attention to Dan. ‘Doesn’t David need you, too?’ she questioned, smiling.
Dan shook his head and then waggled his eyebrows suggestively. ‘He wanted to go through something with Rupert and Jessie, yet again.’
Huffing indignantly, Emma shot back, ‘Personally I think they’ve had enough rehearsal time, don’t you?’
Laughing, he shrugged his shoulders. ‘Don’t worry, Em, you’ll get your turn next year,’ he teased.
She should have known that was coming, but she couldn’t help the look that crossed her features as what he said sank in. Every single time. Reaching for the cushion Katie had dropped in her haste to leave, she flung it in his direction and at his quickly retreating form.
‘Yeah, Dan, you better run!’ Emma called after him, fighting laughter.
As a general rule, she tried not to think about what was coming over the next year or so too much. All of this would be over soon and that was something that scared her an awful lot if she were truthful with herself. They’d all grown so close over the years and having it all taken away again would be heartbreaking. Friends she’d made on the Harry Potter set would be friends for life now.
She’d miss some more than others of course, Rupert and Dan especially, and again, that’s why she didn’t think about it all that often. It wasn’t a pleasant thought, not at all.
Finally getting up from her comfortable position on the couch, Emma decided to head for the canteen to get a drink and take her mind off it. Walking across the studios with her arms wrapped around herself for warmth, she glanced up to the sky a moment. Shivering slightly, watching the clouds gathering, she could tell there was definitely snow on the horizon.
Reaching the canteen fives minutes later, she got herself a coke and then sat down alone at one of the tables. She leant her chin on an outstretched hand, eyes to the window, and allowed herself to get lost in the same thoughts that had preoccupied her earlier that day.
How much did it matter that her grandparents liked Rupert? More than she cared to admit if she were honest.
