Chapter 16 – What Friends Are For
Date: Saturday 9th July 2011
Location: Redbourn Golf Club, Hertfordshire, England
‘I’m free tomorrow night if that’s any good…’
Rupert sighed, sinking down into his seat and running his hands through his hair. ‘I’m not,’ he responded. ‘There are a few scenes we need to pick up for the film, so I’m going back up to the Lakes. Sorry Em, I really did want to try and see you this week, it’s a nightmare though, there’s no time.’
‘I understand Rupes, it doesn’t matter,’ she told him softly.
Even though she sounded OK about everything, he could tell that she wasn’t. She hesitated too often, her breath catching in her throat, words too bold to be sincere. He wanted to believe her, he really did, but he couldn’t help but get the impression she was slowly dying inside. He’d never set out to do this to her yet, somehow, he was only making it worse day by day.
‘When I get home maybe we can-’
‘Don’t feel you have to try and make time for me,’ she cut him off abruptly. ‘We’re not together, they don’t make a rule book for this, so do whatever you can.’
Rupert let a breath go, closing his eyes for a second as he mulled things over, deciding what to say next. He couldn’t help but think she was slowly, but surely, giving up on him. It was the last thing he wanted; for what they had to just start falling apart at the seams after they’d been through so much. He loved her too much to just lose her over his own stupidity.
Realising that he was in love with her was a new revelation and something he had figured out upon their return from The Ivy just over a week ago. Before then, it hadn’t really occurred to him that what he was feeling was in fact love and not infatuation. Why it had taken him so long to understand that, he didn’t know.
‘But I want to see you, Em,’ he said gently, reinstating the fact. ‘Time really isn’t on my side though and it’s not fair because-’
Emma cut him off before he could finish. ‘We’d have more time if she was out of the picture,’ she told him seriously. ‘All those nights you sit in with her, you could be spending with me. We could be together and I mean really together.’
‘I know,’ Rupert whispered, suddenly feeling rather dejected. ‘It’s so hard though, I don’t – I have no idea what to say to make this any better.’
She was silent for several moments and then murmured, ‘When you figure it out, give me a call, when you figure anything out.’
It was the fact that she’d hit the nail right on the head that hurt the most. He’d been dancing around the whole situation for much too long and it was time to do something about it before he really did lose her. He couldn’t do that though, he wouldn’t. Not this time, not ever.
‘Emma, I-’
He didn’t get chance to finish as the other end of the line went dead and he fell silent, the declaration dying in his throat. Now probably wasn’t the best time anyway. She didn’t want to hear ‘I love you’s’ before he did anything to prove it to her. He needed to show her it was true before he said anything foolish.
Pocketing his phone, Rupert turned his attention to his companions, who were staring at him, their amusement written all over their faces. ‘Don’t say a word,’ he said immediately, expression stony. ‘I don’t need your opinions, OK.’
James and Oliver shared a look, and then the latter shrugged his shoulders. ‘Wasn’t going to anyway,’ he responded. ‘It’s none of our business what you’re doing with one of our co-stars, so we’re hardly going to hound you about it.’
‘Definitely not, we’re not interested in the slightest I’m afraid… even if you wanted to tell us,’ James cut in, grinning from ear to ear as he made his point.
Rupert hated them and their reverse psychology because it always worked on him and almost immediately he spilled his guts, rattling away like only he knew how. ‘It’s been going on for months and I can’t stop, I can’t help myself where Emma’s concerned,’ he rambled. ‘It’s like it’s, I don’t know, meant to be happening. Does that make any sense at all?’
A raised eyebrow was his only response, and then James clapped him square around the shoulders, almost knocking him flying in the process. ‘About time,’ he said simply, cracking a bright smile. ‘We’ve been waiting for that announcement for the past three years, Rupert. We’re not stupid.’
He nodded and laughed in relief, glancing out across the golf course before looking back to the twins. ‘I guess we were the stupid ones waiting so long,’ he responded, shrugging his shoulders. ‘But there was always something in the way.’
James shook his head, plucking out a club and eyeing his shot a moment. Oliver was the one to speak though, his words sarcastic yet gentle at the same time. ‘And your girlfriend isn’t an obstacle at all of course,’ he murmured.
‘Well, that’s just – I mean she-‘ Rupert sighed and stopped, looking down at his feet.
‘She doesn’t mean all that much to you I reckon,’ he continued. ‘Otherwise she’d just be another of those things getting in the way… and she’s kind of not, is she? Not getting in the way at all.’
The annoying thing was that Oliver was right in every single way. If Aimée really meant that much to him, he wouldn’t have let the affair with Emma happen in the first place. But as it stood, he’d jumped in there headfirst without any hesitation whatsoever. He didn’t regret a single second he’d spent with Emma, they were together now and that was all that mattered to him. It wasn’t important anymore as to who he hurt in the process, she was what he wanted, what he’d always wanted really and as long as he had her…
‘Does it honestly matter right now?’ James asked suddenly and Rupert blinked himself from his thoughts.
‘Of course it matters. Look at him!’
At that, he perked an eyebrow and asked, ‘You do realise I have a golf club in my hand, don’t you?’
Oliver laughed, taking several steps back and feigning worry. ‘I did notice, yeah…’ he said. ‘But if you try hitting me with that I will be reporting back to Miss Watson what kind of boyfriend she really has.’
‘Not if I hit you hard enough,’ retorted Rupert playfully.
He’d needed this. A bit of light relief before things got dark. He wanted things to be right, but thinking about how he’d have to go about it wasn’t exactly pleasant. Not that it mattered, he needed to do it and that was that.
