Say Goodbye
Chapter 5 – Leaving on a Jet Plane

Date: Monday 9th May 2011
Location: Heathrow Airport, London, England

Taking a seat in the departure lounge, Emma gazed up at the board in front of her, watching as flights came and went, the tiny orange letters and numbers blinking on and off. She was regretting visiting Rupert now. Her head would be spinning throughout the entire flight and unfortunately it wasn’t just a quick hop across the English Channel either. They were talking a good ten hours.

‘Here we go then. One caffè latte with an extra shot of espresso as ordered.’ Tonya passed over the Starbucks cup as she claimed the seat to Emma’s right. ‘I decided against coffee. Flying always gives me a jippy tummy.’

Yet another over share courtesy of Tonya Sprinkman. Available for all your nerve-racking moments and what’s more, completely free! ‘Wouldn’t want that,’ she murmured, fiddling with the paper cup. ‘Don’t want to spend the whole flight getting in and out of my seat so you can visit the bathroom all the time...’

Emma had known Tonya for the past three years; they’d met at her University’s Freshers’ Ball. Naturally, everyone had known who she was, so she found it difficult to fit in because most of the time they were only interested in her celebrity status. Tonya had been the misfit of the class of ’11, rather plump in comparison to her classmates with tightly curled black hair and a habit of talking too much. She was the one the cool kids always made fun of. The pair had naturally been drawn to one another.

Things were different now. She’d slimmed down considerably and although she was still no Kate Moss, she looked fantastic for it. For the first time in years she visited Toni and Guy from time to time to have her hair styled instead of leaving it to dry naturally and simply hoping for the best. She actually spent time on herself opposed to rolling out of bed and heading out, something she’d done more often than not during their first year.

This morning, Tonya was sporting an oversized pair of black jewelled sunglasses and a sunny disposition. It may have been four in the morning, but she was staying positive and it was beginning to grate on Emma’s nerves.

‘Don’t be silly, Emma, I’d sit in the aisle,’ she said, proving the point as she giggled and shook her head. ‘Honestly, where are you today?’

To be completely honest, she’d left a part of her back at Rupert’s apartment when she’d rushed out. A tiny fragment of her was still wrapped up in those bed sheets, soaking up his warmth and inhaling the subtle scent of musk lingering on the pillows. But she wasn’t about to tell Tonya that, her friend didn’t even know where she’d been tonight, let alone what she’d been doing and who she’d been doing it with.

‘Tired, that’s all…’ said Emma. No kidding, she was more than tired. ‘I’ll live.’

Tonya smiled, chugging on her water bottle and looking at the clock. ‘You’re the one who booked the stupid flight times, don’t complain to me!’

Returning the smile, she shook her head and quickly argued, ‘I wasn’t, just had a busy day with packing and everything.’ Everything being the operative word in that sentence. ‘Perhaps we should be drinking vodka instead.’

‘Oh God, no! I’d definitely spend the entire flight in the loo, you could bet on it.’

Emma laughed, popping the lid off her coffee and idly beginning to mix the contents up with the pathetic excuse for a stirrer Tonya had picked up. ‘Maybe we’ll pass then.’

They were sat in the first class departures lounge and the same place they’d been sat for the past two hours since getting through security checks. They were bored, overtired and crabby – Emma especially so. All she wanted to do now was crawl into bed and cuddle up, but unfortunately, that was the last thing she’d be able to do. Somehow, a reclining seat, a set of headphones and an eye mask didn’t seem all that appealing to her.

Suddenly Tonya jabbed her in the ribs and she glanced up just in time to see the screen change. Oh, thank God, about time! Emma scrambled to her feet, picking up her Louis Vuitton travel bag and started for the gate with her friend by her side who, despite her earlier calm appearance, managed to drop her passport four times on the walk there and trip over the hem of her white dress.

By the time the flight left the runway, they were nearing six a.m. and they watched as the early morning sun made its climb up into the clouds, the sky awash with gold and the lights of London disappearing into the distance.

Emma settled down into her seat with a battered copy of Pride and Prejudice shortly after, pulling her blanket up to her neck and reclining her seat as far as it would go, just passing time until they came around with food and drinks. She managed ten pages and then the old man sitting in front of her began to snore. And not quietly either, they were the kind of snores that reverberated off walls and disturbed half the cabin.

Shaking her head, she hid her face behind her book and sighed, rolling her eyes. Without a doubt this would be the worst flight of her life.

After a complimentary champagne break, she reached for the phone at the side of her seat, idly playing with the chord as she debated whether to call Rupert or not. It could certainly kill some time and they hadn’t managed to say a proper goodbye earlier after all. That made up her mind and she swiped her credit card, punching in his mobile number, waiting as it rang.

'Hello…?’

He picked up on the fifth ring, sounding groggy. Obviously she’d woken him up, even though it was getting on for ten a.m. already. Trust Rupert to while the day away sleeping.

‘Rupes, it’s me,’ she murmured, not wanting too many people to hear their conversation. ‘Do you have time to talk?’

‘I always have time for you, Em.’ She could almost hear him smiling into the phone. ‘Miss me already?’

Emma laughed. ‘Something like that.’

‘How’s your flight?’

‘Horrible,’ she told him. ‘There’s some guy sat in front of me snoring, I’m surprised you can’t hear him.’ As the words left her lips, he gave another guttural snore that closely resembled the boosters of the plane she was currently residing in.

Failing to stifle a laugh, Rupert exclaimed, ‘I heard that!’

She smiled, peering over the seat in front of her at the culprit, whose mouth was open so wide he could catch flies. ‘Maybe I can choke him on his blanket, that might solve my problem,’ she said softly. ‘Do you think they’d figure out it was me?’

‘Is anyone watching?’

‘Don’t think so.’ She glanced back and forth sleuth style. ‘No, the coast’s clear.’

‘Go for it then.’

Nodding, more for her own benefit than his, Emma observed the man for a moment longer before collapsing back into her seat. ‘Are you still in bed?’ she questioned, lolling her head over to the left and coming face-to-face with Tonya. She too was asleep and brandishing an eye mask with the words ‘FUCK OFF’ splashed across it in large purple lettering.

How charming, how very Tonya.

‘Mmm...’

She laughed. ‘Does that mean yes?’

‘Yeah, I’m… definitely still in bed.’

‘Exactly where I left you?’ The thought conjured up delicious images that would easily keep her entertained for the rest of the flight. Forget in-flight entertainment, she had a gorgeous redhead to keep her occupied.

Rupert sounded amused as he answered, 'Give or take a few inches. But yeah, pretty much where you left me.’

For some reason, this elevated her spirits and she couldn’t help but grin. ‘Wish I was still there with you,’ she whispered. ‘Last night was-’

‘Amazing?’

‘I was going to say-’

‘Phenomenal?’

‘No.’ She smiled. ‘What I mean is, I’ll really miss that if… well, you know.’

A brief silence followed and then he murmured, ‘Me too.’

Emma sighed, closing her eyes and rubbing her forehead. ‘It’s all going to be OK, isn’t it? We’ll figure this out?’

‘Yeah… sure, everything’s going to be fine.’

They exchanged several more words before she noticed one of the flight attendants on their way round with hot drinks, so ended the conversation there. After chatting to a sleepy Tonya for twenty minutes over tea, she decided she could do with some shut eye too and settled down, hitting play on her iPod and closing herself off to the world for several hours.

By the time they landed at the airport, the two girls had done a complete turn around. Emma, buzzing with excitement, practically skipped through the terminal and Tonya, sighing heavily as she lugged her extra large case through customs, muttered and cursed as security decided to riffle through her handbag.

The hotel Emma booked she had thought perfect at the time. She’d known the moment she laid eyes on it in the brochure and closer inspection upon arrival proved her right. She knew immediately that she made the right choice. With a pool that stretched out onto the ocean, stunning views and a spa to die for, they would undoubtedly be in heaven for two weeks.

So what if things weren’t particularly rosy at home, she had the opportunity to forget about it for a little while… and forget about it she would.
